Private businesses can choose patrons – April 26, 2006 [Letter to the Editor]

In response to Andrea Aseff’s bash on private businesses in the downtown area, I would like to remind her that private businesses are allowed to have any policies they wish regarding entrance into their property and dress codes therein.

She instructed us to “visit downtown and note there are far more Caucasian student bar-goers than minorities, including blacks.”

I’m terribly sorry, Aseff, there are more whites than blacks downtown, but this tends to occur when whites outnumber blacks 13 to 1.

If she is so adamant about increasing the number of minorities at the University, I suggest she join the Georgia Recruitment Team or other organizations that wish to encourage minorities to enroll at the University.

Don’t forget, if you wish to increase the number of blacks downtown, you are free to open your own bar that discriminates in its entrance and dress code requirements. You have that right, as does every other owner of a private business.

Chris Lindsey, a sophomore from Grayson, also saw the resolution as positive for students but questioned the importance of the SGA resolution.

“I think it’s a very good thing, but they’re doing all this work for a bill that’s not going to pass,” Lindsey said, referring to the fact that this state legislative session will end shortly.

Black Tie Party runs small campaign – February 7, 2006

Vice presidential candidate Chris Lindsey shared his running mate’s sentiments. “We want to help as much as possible to lead SGA into the future,” Lindsey said. “We have not been given that chance to get involved yet.”

Campaigning begins for SGA – February 2, 2006

Noah Mink, presidential candidate from the Black Tie Party, said that his party didn’t put up flyers Feb. 1 because it would create a lot of litter.

“We want a quieter, more grassroots-style campaign to start off,” Mink said. “We’ll put up flyers later in the week.”
